Valerie earned a doctorate in audiology, a master’s degree in speech pathology and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University. This was followed by an unconventional career in hearing healthcare. She was a clinician, the rep for a cochlear implant company and a college professor in the United States, New Zealand South Korea and Singapore. For the last eight years she has been taking creative writing classes and participating in multiple critique groups. Through it all, she has also been a voracious, omnivorous reader. Frustrated with the narrow depiction of older women in contemporary fiction, she decided to do something about it. Her debut novel, The Badass Widows is a result.
