Creative Non-Fiction, Personal Essay, Memoir
Under the Gum Tree is a reader-supported, quarterly literary arts magazine based in Sacramento, publishing creative nonfiction and visual art. We believe in the power of telling stories without shame—and by without shame, we mean that the writers featured in our pages own their story, even the ugly parts, and share it with honesty and candid vulnerability. Each issue includes original nonfiction stories and personal essays. We nominate for The Pushcart Prize every year and work we have published has been listed as notable in The Best American Essays. In 2025 we made the Chill Subs Best Lit Mag list for Beautiful Design. Under the Gum Tree was founded in 2011 by editor and publisher, Janna Marlies Maron, local book coach & editor for women writing true stories.
