In the spring of 2024, a few folks from the California Writers Club – Sacramento Branch got together with an idea to do something amazing – to bring a book festival to the greater Sacramento Valley. We held the first annual Sacramento Book Festival at the farmer’s market in McKinley Park in East Sacramento, and our second one on May 31st, 2025 at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center, also in McKinley Park.
The second festival was an amazing success, with 140 authors, five bookstores, a dozen local writing and literacy organizations, and an estimated attendance of 5,000 people. The response to our book drive for Mustard Seed School also blew us away – they took home two carloads of books (and had to leave a couple boxes of books behind to be delivered to them later).
We wanted to thank everyone for helping us pull this event off:
- Thank you to our festival committee members – Tim, Judith, Bel, Lois, and Scott – who donated hundreds of hours of their own time.
- Thank you to all of our dedicated volunteers who helped us pull this off.
- Thank you to the local authors, many of whom put up with annoying heat (thank you mother nature for gifting us with the hottest day of the year!) and brought such a lovely variety of books to sell at the event.
- Thank you to everyone in the community who helped us get the word out – bookstores and coffee shops, local media, and all those Little Free Libraries we visited multiple times over the last couple of months to drop off fliers.
- Thank you to our sponsors for believing in us and helping us afford our venue, and thank you to the local businesses and organizations that offered great prizes for our scavenger hunt.
- Thank you to Tim and Bernard, who kicked the whole thing off last year with our first festival at the Mckinley Park Farmer’s Market, and to our amazing festival team –
- And finally, thank you to all the readers who turned out by the thousands to buy our books and to attend our author panels and James Rollins’ keynote speech – the panel room was packed all day!
We’re already working hard to make the 2026 Sacramento Book Festival more accessible, comfortable, and even bigger and better than this one.

The California Writers Club (CWC), Sacramento Branch shall foster professionalism in writing, promote networking of writers with the writing community, mentor new writers, and provide literary support for writers and the writing community as is appropriate through education and leadership.
The club supports all genres, writing styles, and related professions such as editing, publishing, photographic journalism, and literary agents.
CWC Sacramento Branch will provide an environment where members can obtain critique of their efforts, attend workshops, and share experiences. CWC Sacramento Branch endeavors to mentor writers of all ages by providing educational programs for adults and fostering youth programs, including providing qualified speakers experienced in various writing-related disciplines at monthly membership meetings.
